Garden Goals for 2011

Goal #1: to grow the more expensive vegetables that are not as readily available. For example, cucumbers, peppers, peas are not sold in 50 pounds bags like potatoes and onions. When I can purchase 50 pounds of potatoes for $14 it seems silly to use up precious soil space for potatoes, but growing peppers to add to salsa, spaghetti sauce, etc, when they can be up to $2 a pound makes more sense.
Goal #2: Grow something that I have never grown before. I would like to grow some corn, I know it will probably only yield enough for one meal but I want to learn how.
Goal #3: Try alternate growing method. For example, my neighbor taught me about an alternative way to grow potatoes in a barrel and just keep covering the potatoes with more soil.
Goal #4: Grow enough of something to equal a year supply of that one thing for our family. For example, our family eats green beans once every two weeks, about a quart. Grow enough green beans to be able to can 26 quarts of green beans.
Goal #5: Convince Nathan that having chickens is good for a garden.

I will keep you posted on the plan to be able to accomplish these goals.
